The importance of Fluoride
Why do we need fluoride?
I can remember as a child going to the dentist and having my teeth cleaned. Every time, right after the cleaning I would receive a fluoride treatment. As I became older, the fluoride treatments seemed to be done less and less until ultimately, they no longer were a part of my visit. Fluoride treatments do not have to stop at some magical age. In fact, they are still extremely important and beneficial as we get older. As we age, often there is recession that occurs around the teeth. This recession exposes the root surfaces of the teeth and often causes increased thermal sensitivity. Beyond the sensitivity, the root surface is actually much softer than the hard, protective enamel of the crown. This surface is much more susceptible to decay. Fluoride treatments can protect these vulnerable surfaces from decay as well as improve sensitivity. Research shows that fluoridated tooth structure dissolves at a much more acidic pH than non-fluoridated tooth structure. Why wouldn't you want to protect your teeth with a simple in-office fluoride treatment? The concentration of our fluoride treatments are about 5 times that of normal over-the-counter toothpaste. This allows a large amount of fluoride to be taken up into the teeth and give you the protection you need. Next time you are in ask us about our fluoride treatments - good for all ages!
